About this deal

With the eyepieces supplied by Celestron, you won't get hugely close-up views of the surface of the moon, but you'll be able to see craters and get a feel for the rugged terrain along the terminator (the point where night meets day). It might be capable of spotting faint galaxies, but without a finderscope, you’ll be stumbling around in the dark. Robert Reeves first photographed the Moon in 1959, just as our space program was setting its sights on lunar exploration. The 5x24 finderscope provided with the bracket, facilitates the fast and accurate location of astronomical observations. Just select Zygo Test Report from the drop down box at the top of the listing and we will test the optics in house and provide a full 2 page report with your scope.

Planetarium software package which provides easy-to-understand explanations and impressive visuals of all kinds. When you’re ready, you’ll need to insert the lowest power eyepiece you have – this will be the eyepiece with the largest number on it. The set allows you to choose the best filter to use with different eyepiece and telescope combinations. This entry-level telescope is a great choice for kids and families who are ready to take an interest in the stars.

Celestron is arguably the best-known manufacturer of telescopic equipment in the world and produces a wide range of scopes to suit all ages and levels of experience. The FirstScope is a quality Dobsonian style telescope features a 76 mm aperture reflector optical tube. Robert Reeves' signature FirstScope comes with a custom wrap that highlights 10 lunar features to explore, including Tycho, Plato, and Copernicus. This quality Dobsonian-style telescope features a spherical glass mirror with a generous 76 mm of aperture. Similarly, if you’re looking for a small scope for a younger child, or maybe a portable scope for the family, this could nicely fit the bill. One of the most important factors in a telescope is its transmission—the percentage of light that reaches the focal plane.

Its compact design makes the FirstScope Signature Series easy to take along on your next camping trip, picnic, or hike.Celestron PowerTank Glow 5000 – a red flashlight is also essential if you’re using star charts and books as it will protect your night vision. And when we took the telescope out to assemble it, we noticed that two of the feet were snapped off! Unfortunately, it’s the lack of accessories (such as the lunar filter, decent eyepieces and finderscope) that let the FirstScope down and could result in the young astronomer becoming frustrated and losing interest.

For starters, the field of view is much wider, which makes for a much more comfortable observing experience.

Better suited as a beginner telescope, this Newtonian reflector is a worthwhile low-budget purchase for children — especially if you suspect that astronomy is likely to be a passing phase or basic but fair views of the moon, planets and stars are suitable before investing in an upgrade. The optics do not provide pin-sharp sights through the field of view since the focuser tube is quite loose, but even such basic observations are sure to delight those who have always wanted to get a closer look at the lunar surface without straining their eyes. Inexperienced astronomers or children might not notice, but there are better quality eyepieces available that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
